Mary Lou Romney, Painter of Life Mary Lou Romney (born 1929) is an American painter who is well known for her botanical illustration, landscape and portrait paintings, and the discovery and use of several different artistic media. She introduced Opaque Chinese Watercolors, Chinese paper-cutting, and Oriental ink and brush techniques into the intermountain area of artists. She developed techniques of folding and dipping rice paper, described as color washes, and other more traditional oils and acrylics into her artwork. She became well known for using watercolor pencils in botanical illustrations. Mary Lou was a popular teacher, as adjunct faculty for Utah State University, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and in her private studio. She taught workshops and did demonstrations throughout Utah and Idaho. She founded the Ching Hai Oriental Painting Society (CHOPS) to promote interest in Asian art techniques in Salt Lake City, Utah. She served on the board of directors, and as president of the Utah Watercolor Society. A monumental achievement was to design and develop the Sego Lily fountain, and have 50 of her Utah wildflower drawings adapted to sand-blasted panels of sandstone installed in the permanent benches in the courtyard of the Walter P. Cottam Visitors Center of Red Butte Gardens, at the University of Utah in the eastern foothills of Salt Lake City, Utah. Her art is found in private collections across the United States, but mostly held in a family trust collection in Idaho, United States. Mary Lou was loved and admired for her friendly, whimsical approach to artistic expression
Life and Technique Mary Louisa Stone was born 5 February 1929 in St Anthony, Idaho, United States of America. [1] She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and from an early age showed great creativity in journalism, music, and art. [2] Mary Lou participated in piano recitals [4], and studied art at the University of Utah to the level of sophomore until her marriage in 1948. She married Richard Paul Romney in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.[3] Mary Lou Romney, was well-known and recognized among artists and fine art galleries throughout Utah. Romney received national recognition as an emerging artist through the latter part of the 20th century.[18] In her early college years, Mary Lou embraced creative techniques of master artists while beginning her studies at the University of Utah. She gave birth to and raised seven children. When the youngest of them was in High School, Mary Lou enrolled in a BFA program at the University of Utah in the late 1970's, and studied under many professors who helped shape and refine her skills and interests, among them Alvin Gittins, Robert S. Olpin, Nate Winters, Ed Maryon, and Lennox Tierney. Interested in the interaction between Eastern and Western cultures in art, Mary Lou pursued this comparison as her thesis for an MFA degree at Utah State University in the 1980's where she studied under Harrison Groutage, Adrian Van Suchtelen and Marion Hyde. She was intrigued by the importance of observation in drawing and painting. She was particularly known for portraying plants and flowers in her art. Mary Lou Romney was awarded the MFA degree at Utah State University in 1987, publishing her thesis "The Essence of Growing Things."[19]
Robert Olpin writes this description of Mary Lou Romney and her work: "This sensitive painter of powerful flower, landscape, and portrait depictions… One of Salt Lake City's most effective and active art community organizers and participants, Mary Lou has also been the creator of some of Utah's most striking exhibition entries in recent years. After completing a Master of Fine Arts degree, Mary Lou established her own studio in Salt Lake City. Also, a fine teacher, she uses her knowledge of both the Western and Eastern traditions to further her work in the classroom and studio."[16]
One of Six Emerging Artists in the United States In the August 1988 issue of the American Artist Magazine Mary Lou Romney was featured as one of six emerging artists chosen in a nationwide talent search conducted in coordination with The Greenwich Workshop. Mary Lou co-presented an exhibit and workshop in Chinese Brush Painting with Carrie Koo-Mei, from Hong Kong. The show titled Unfolding Forces was featured on the University of Utah campus in the Alvin Gittins Gallery, including both artists’ work with water medium on paper. [96]
