The early 2000's brought some of Mary Lou's most challenging work, as she matured in her design techniques, blending several styles and methods on the same canvas or paper.  Her time was cut short when, in 2003 she died unexpectedly while on a family trip to Alabama.  Her work has been preserved in her studio since that time, and among many who purchased her art.  

Though crippled with arthritis, and struggling to hold brush and pencil, Mary Lou created these paintings dated 2000, 2001, and 2003:
